We will carve wooden spoons with a completely portable tool kit consisting of axe, knife, and spoon knife. These three tools, and their use will be explored as we build the skill set needed to create our own wooden spoons for use around the apartment or homestead. Carving spoons is a great way to get into woodworking due to the fact that we already know what a spoon is, and basically how it works. Couple this with the fact that you can find free wood for carving in just about any area that you live in, and you have a hobby that is inexpensive, portable, and fun. What more can you ask for?
Each student can expect to carve chopsticks, a couple of cooking spoons, and start work on an eating spoon if they wish. Knife sharpening will be covered along with how to sharpen an axe for use with carving. Students should feel free to bring any of their own tools if they have them, and the tools that we use in class will be available for purchase.
Instructor - Hazen Alward
Hazen Alward, instructor, is a multi-skilled craftsman and craft enthusiast that had always worked with metal and masonry until finding out how much you could do with green wood. He has carved spoons and turned bowls commercially to supplement the family income, and now loves to teach others how to create useful wooden items that they can enjoy in their homes. He also teaches green woodworking at the John C. Campbell Folk School.
