Leather Knife Sheath Making Weekend April 4-5

Turtle Island is honored to welcome instructor Rob Keeton of Keeton Custom Leather in Knoxville, Tennessee. Rob has been doing leathercraft for over 20 years with over 10 years of experience teaching adults in vocational and academic environments. Rob will lead this hands-on workshop, introducing participants to the world of leathercrafting and teaching skills needed to make a custom sheath for a knife of their choosing.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes:

- Safety considerations

- Leathercraft basics

- Selection and proper use of tools

- How to select leather

- Safe and secure sheath construction

- How to make a pattern

- Basic leather tooling/carving

- Hand sewing techniques

- Setting hardware such as rivets and snaps

- Dyeing and finishing

- How to care for leather goods

Special Considerations: Participants will be handling sharp tools, including a knife, leather cutting tools, leather punches, and needles. Safety rules will be discussed, and participants will be instructed on how to handle, use and store tools securely and safely.

All knives brought to this class must be 'fixed-blade' (A fixed blade knife, does not fold or slide, and is typically stronger due to the tang, the extension of the blade into the handle, and lack of moving parts.) with a blade length not to exceed 6 inches. No prior leather crafting experience is needed. Materials and tools will be provided, but participants may bring their own tools if they already have some.

This event is open to a small group of adults only. (Exceptions can sometimes be made for mature minors accompanied by a chaperoning parent.) *All tools and materials provided. This workshop is geared towards beginners but advanced students are also welcome...
