Musical Instrument Making - Didgeridoos & End-Blown flutes
October 9-11
Join naturalist, Fuz Sanderson and cultural arts educator, Hawk Hurst, for an immersive, hands-on workshop where you will learn the ancient art of creating and decorating your very own Australian-style, bamboo didgeridoo and a Native American-style, end-blown flute. This comprehensive class goes beyond simple construction, offering a rich exploration into the cultural, ecological, and technical aspects of these unique musical instruments.
Workshop Leaders
Hawk and Fuz have taught, played, and performed together for nearly three decades, in particular at the Earthskills Rendezvous, the Piedmont Earthskills Gathering, and at the Green River Preserve Summer Camp and SEE programs. They performed with the band Sapien, and its spinoff, Sapien Dreamtime, for many years, culminating in a notable tour of South Africa. They are both considered master educators in their respective fields.
Cultural History: We will begin with a respectful and insightful look into the deep and rich cultural history of the first nations people - the original custodians and innovators of the didgeridoo and the end-blown flute. Learn about each instrument's significance in ceremonies, storytelling, and daily life, gaining an appreciation for its spiritual and social role.
Bamboo Ecology and Application: Discover the remarkable plant material at the heart of your creation—bamboo and river cane. We will explore the ecology of various species, discussing its sustainable nature, incredible strength, and diverse uses far beyond musical instruments. Participants will learn how to select, prepare, and treat the cane and the bamboo to ensure the highest quality instrument.
Safe Tool Use and Craftsmanship: Safety is paramount. A segment of the class will be dedicated to the safe handling and proper use of the tools of the trade required for shaping, hollowing, and finishing your instruments.
Artistic Decoration: Unleash your creativity by decorating your finished instrument. Learn techniques for applying traditional-style patterns, modern designs, or personal motifs, transforming your functional, tuned instrument into a unique piece of art.
Playing Techniques and Circular Breathing: The class will culminate in the performance aspect. With the didgeridoo, Fuz will provide detailed instruction on fundamental playing techniques, including how to generate the distinctive drone and use vocalizations. The final, essential skill you will master is circular breathing, a technique vital for producing the continuous sound of the didgeridoo, allowing you to sustain the drone for extended periods. Hawk will share his nearly four decades-long journey with the Native American flute, sharing basic breathing and fingering techniques used when playing this finely tuned instrument.
Campfire Fun: Hawk and Fuz will offer stories, music, and a grand old time around both of our evening campfire programs. Come prepared to join in by bringing a hand drum, rattle, or shaker.
