Howdy Folks! Day light saving are already in effect and we're feeling the north winds blow colder temperatures down into our little hollow. After Summer Camp season ended, we focused our attention on processing firewood. Its a real treasure to live and work in this forested mountainscape with plentiful fuel and resources to keep us warm and cook our food. We also directed a lot of attention on the harvesting of our warm weather crops. We were blessed with beautiful beets, gorgeous greens, tasty taters, and oh so much okra! We give thanks for this abundant horn of plenty. We also want to thank our countless helpers - a fantastic team of volunteers, keeping the farm going, preparing meals in our outdoor kitchen, working on various projects and in general, making life better!
Right now we're looking to strenghten our VOLUNTEER crew. Maybe you or someone you know might like to learn more about plugging-in behind the scenes as a Turtle Island Volunteer. If you're interested in contacting our current volunteer coordinator, send an email to: email@example.com. Thanks goes out also to the many visitors for Horse Drawn Carriage Tours with Eustace, College and University alternative breaks and school field trips groups from Wake Forest Charter Academy, The Burlington School, TC Roberson and even a boy scout troop. (props to our older-boys camper Raleigh for being such a great host!)
In late October Eustace, a few volunteers and internship-graduates Gabe and Bo made an appearance at the annual Historic Hart's Square event to teach the art of riving shingles from red-oak trees. The day was filled with skilled instructors and awe-inspired spectators. We saw old friends and made some new ones. In fact, we've met so many great like-minded folks over the past few months! Hello to all of you! As we hunker down for winter, we hold great visions of the many wonderful programs to come - once the weather gets warm again. Save the dates for the annual "Families-Learning-Together" Saturday April 16th, 2016 here's a video of what to expect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UYh4ue8JW8
We also have several new workshops coming up in the spring of 2016 from hide-tanning, blacksmithing and a new forestry class led by Eustace himself - so please keep in touch by checking our facebook page regularly. We have suspended our Turtle Tracks e-newsletter until the spring but don't hesitate to call or email to keep in touch. And to all our past and current campers - don't forget to light your candle on December 24th in honor and commemoration for our bond with Turtle Island.
