Farewell Brother Preston Roberts

We wish there were a different reason for this message. We wish we could walk away from writing it. And yet, we are humbled and honored to know just how many hearts this sad news will break, for it speaks to the power a single good man can have in this world.

On July 24th, 2017 at 3:30pm, Preston James Roberts passed peacefully away in the arms of his wife Kathleen, surrounded by family and loved ones. Preston had a large inoperable tumor on his liver that obstructed the flow of blood and oxygen to his organs and body. The change was rapid and outpaced any treatment -- just three weeks ago he was teaching at Boys Camp. While the suddenness of his departure is shocking, we draw some consolation from the fact that his last days were full of family and friends instead of drawn-out suffering.

There is no replacing a human life, and the specialness of Preston as teacher, mentor, builder, friend, artist, elder, inspiration, dancer, leader, and solid rock foundation leaves a chasm in our community. Preston was as practical as he was creative, and over any abyss he would find a way to build a bridge whose quality was matched only by its beauty. He lived for summer camp, and his life and spirit are infused all over Turtle Island, in the buildings, the ceremonies, the land, and the misty mountain air itself. Help us build a bridge and honor his life by ensuring that Turtle Island camps continue far into the future, whether that means lighting a candle on December 24th, sponsoring a camper, or lending a hand in one of the many building projects Preston had planned for the upcoming year.

Preston's family is currently planning burial and memorial services, and we will reach out with more information as it develops. In the meantime, please consider supporting Preston's family in their time of grief.

We leave you with Preston's words from this past year's holiday message to campers:

"It's cold this morning, the sun is just peeking its head above the mountain. I wonder what it is like at Morning Watch this morning? I wish I was there, this moment, curled in a thick wool blanket, watching the light, birds, and in my minds eye I am there, with you and the others that have carried your stone and placed it in that sacred circle of stones. In my minds eye I can sail through the trees, past the tree-house, classroom, the gazebo and your shoes, over the patch on the barn roof, over the spot we plan to build a traditional carpentry shop, sweeping high into the cold air alongside a raven, looking at the place we love below and wishing for it to continue forever..."

Much love, indescribable gratitude, and, as always, still learning...

May God bless the Roberts family during this time of sadness. This was an amazing man with endless knowledge. This world needs more people like him. I will miss seeing him on Mountain Men along side of Eustace. They were an awsome team. One thing for sure is Heaven gained some very big wings on July 24th. R. I. P. PRESTON. Peach to his family and friends.

I am nothing more than a fan of the show. I didn't know Preston, but he and Eustace were my favorite contributor's to Mountain Men. This might come across as crazy but I honestly feel like I've lost a mentor. Preston represented a simple, honest way of life that is lost to most. I am just in disbelief. God bless you Sir, go rest high on that mountain.

Sorry for your lost. GOD speed.JD

Our lives were enriched by Preston. The legacy of his good nature will live on for generations who come to know him through television and his other exploits. He is missed. Rest in nature Preston.

We are covering Preston's family and friends with prayer as they deal with their grief over his death. It was obvious that Preston was a good man and I'm sure he has left an excellent legacy on this earth.

Very sad to hear of his passing.

My husband and I loved watching this show - Preston and Eustice worked so well together. He was a wonderful person and we will miss him. Our deepest sympathy to his wife and family. He will be missed

I have watched mountain men for years. I never realized the depth of education these two men I became so fond of watching possessed. I only knew that they were two of the most creatively smart men I was ever able to have the pleasure to be transformed into their lives and learn from in a few short episodes. I will so deeply miss Preston's soft kind input as I am truly sure Eustace will. So sorry for the loss of such a Great man and Teacher. Thanks to his wonderful family for sharing him with all of us humble people.

So sorry to hear about the passing of Preston Roberts. Love, thoughts and prayers for his family and friends. We really love watching the show and Preston will be truly missed.

I was in total shock when I saw the loss of Preston at the end of the "Mountain Men" this week! Though I never had the opportunity to meet Mr.Roberts; his fine character as a beloved husband, father,& friend surely came through on the show. His love for living the life of a TRUE mountain man, & his knowledge of the "old ways" (as well as his knowledge of Native American ways) was a joy to watch & experience through the History Channel's "Mountain Men".
My thoughts & prayers to Kathleen, his boys, family...including Eustace, like a bro n bff, and all those who knew & loved him. God speed Preston. You will be GREATLY missed!!!

So sorry for your loss. Our prayers go out to Preston's wife, family and friends. I know he will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. We enjoy watching "Mountain Men." It was also good to read Preston's Story and all his accomplishments.

I've been watching Preston and Eustice for a year or two and really got to know Preston just by watching him on the show. I am going to miss him very much. I can't believe that I am crying over his loss but he really made a mark on my heart as a gentle caring person. I believe he was a Christian and I will see him again at the second coming of Christ in the air for his church. May God Comfort his family and his best friend Eustice in the name of the son of God Jesus Christ.

I am soo saddened to hear this. Preston was a super neat guy, loved him on the show, very handsome and so calm. Sending prayers and love to family. I am also glad he did not suffer long; he will be missed very much. Not knowing he had any cancer at all; I was shocked he is gone.

I am saddened by the news. Preston was an inspiration to many. He gave hope to many for mankind. Preston is in God's perfect hands.

Rest In Peace Preston. You were a great Man, father, friend and so much more. Prayers to you and your family .

I was so shocked and saddened to learn of Preston's passing at end of Mountain Men this week. I have learned so much from Eustice and Preston over the years. So sad for Preston's family and friends. May God carry you through this difficult time.

Very, very sorry to hear this. He seemed to be such a good human being. I only knew him on Mountain Men, but will surely miss him.

It is a hard life I grew up this way I am so Glad that we got to see Mr. Roberts on the show he will be Sadly missed.

I send my condolences to Preston's wife and family as well as friends (Eustace). I enjoyed watching Preston on Mountain Men as he appeared to be a man with integrity, incredible ingenuity and kindness. I hope it helps a little to know we care and hold you in our prayers! I know Turtle Island will never be the same but may his spirit remain strong by keeping what mattered to him alive. I didn't know him personally but I am guessing he would want us to live life simply, working hard to live life close to the earth in traditional ways.

Shocked and saddened. It's hard to believe this could happen to a man so full of life. At least we all got to know him thanks to Mountain Men.

My wife and I were shocked and very sorry to hear about Mr. Prestons passing. Our hearts and condolences go out to his wife and family; both blood and extended. He will be sadly missed.

When death has come and taken our loved ones, leaving our home so lonely and drear, then do we wonder how others prosper, living so wicked year after year. Rest in peace Preston, loved you on the show, you and I are the same age, I never had the pleasure of meeting you on earth but am looking forward to meeting you in heaven.

There is God for sure
